Impression, Sunrise

Claude Monet, Impression Sunrise, 1872, oil on canvas, 48 x 63 cm, (Musée Marmottan, Paris)

Impression, Sunrise is one of Monet’s most well-known paintings and is also where the term “Impressionism” came from. Instead of focusing on exact details, Monet was more interested in capturing the feeling of the scene through light and color. The orange sun stands out against the cooler blues and grays of the water and sky, showing how light changes the way we see a moment. The loose brushstrokes and slightly blurry forms make the painting feel quick and natural, almost like a memory instead of a realistic image. This painting marked the beginning of artists moving away from strict realism and towards painting personal experience and atmosphere.
